Athens County Fair
So your setting
at the Athens County fair, waiting on the dudes who are suppose to be running the tourney to show up. It’s posted that it starts at 7pm. Check your watch it’s 7:05. No Boards, no bags, no dudes still. Three or four teams have already walked off grumbling and talking to themselves, and there’s 11 or 12 more standing there looking about as confused as you are on what’s going on exactly. The director agrees to try the dudes again one last time from his cell. No answer. And he doesn’t look too concerned himself.
Do you get pissy? Pack up and leave? Be sure to tell everybody what a joke the tourney was for the next 2 weeks?
Get out of here mane! Somebody hand us that microphone! I got 2 boards & 16 bags in the bed of my truck, and if you got $20 in your pocket I say we still got a tourney.
So me and Bobo scribble out a double elimination bracket on the back of some fair flyers, and we have o
urselves the first Cult of Cornhole style Athens Fair tournament baby!
Although it was hard on me at first to break out 2 sets of Brand Spanking New ACO Bags (seriously, they were still in the box) knowing we were about to launch them into some sweet pig shat, I shook it off, told myself it was just good marketing (LMAO), measured out 27 front to front, and ended up playing not just one, but two tourneys all the way past midnight.
Bobo helping get things set up and measured off on a shorter than short notice.
Three of the 12 teams we had in tournament one. And although Bobo and I won the first tourney, it
was no waltz to first. In our final match we were down 8-0, then 12- 2, before coming back to win it 21-16.
One of the younger players informed me that they take their Cornhole extremely serious at the Athens fair. The losers of the grudge match the night before the main Pig Show, have to wash all of the Pigs!!! That’s out!!!
So what seemed a bust at first, turned into a blast. We even got Globetrotter style on em’ and grabbed two youngsters out of the crowd to play with the Dawg and Bobo in Tourney two, to give us another team or two and shake it all up a bit.
Maybe we can’t control the wind, but we can always adjust the sails mane.
