Sports & Saloons: A Win-Win for Everyone

Playing cornhole in the backyard with friends and family is fun, but many people in the greater Cincinnati area have found that playing cornhole at one of their favorite taverns is even better. Read More

Five Tricks to Outwit the Opposite Sex

Whenever I get together with friends to play cornhole we split into guys vs. girls. The inherent competition and the associated prowess for the gender that wins are obvious, but the subtle manipulations that take place between the sexes are less so. In a game such as cornhole, where sheer brute force does not equal superiority, these under-the-radar machinations become the deciding factor. Therefore, it is in each gender's best interest to examine the devices of the other. Here is a glimpse. Read More

A Campus Culture

Everyone has that friend: the eternally adaptable figure that can adjust to fit seamlessly into any atmosphere imaginable. You know, that person that can float effortlessly from an impromptu run-in with distinguished university alumni to a high-energy game against the school’s biggest rival to giving a speech at a local charity event without appearing the least bit fazed. She's the person that everybody loves because he or she is so completely a part of every situation. Read More

Dangers in the Field

Lawn games are meant for large groups of family and friends, and of the options: bocce, horseshoes or lawn darts, cornhole is by far the safest. Players don't wield two pound, hard resin balls, or throw metal objects at five to 10 miles per hour, or fling twelve-inch long needles into the air. Instead, a one-pound bag of corn is tossed onto an inclined board. However, in spite of the seemingly harmless nature of the game, certain dangers do lurk in the field. Read More

The Three Phases of Cornhole

“Potential means you haven’t done anything yet.”

Strong words from NFL hall of fame coach Bill Parcells. It applied to his football players. I believe the words can be applied to today’s cornhole players. The ones who want to reach beyond their potential are the ones who choose to compete against pro level players in the ultimate cornhole competition, a year long quest for the crown called the King of Cornhole.

Then you have Gary. Read More

The Power of Cornhole

Six years ago, no one at Easter Seals Work Resource Center could foresee that 20 sheets of donated plywood would launch a new job training program for people with disabilities, a major fundraiser for the agency, and the Monster Energy World Cornhole Championship. Read More

One Game at a Time

Author’s Note: Names and specific identifying details have been changed to protect the privacy of those concerned.

I work for a homeless outreach coalition, in the same Appalachian town I’ve spent most of my life. In many ways it’s an unremarkable place—the college kids annoy the ‘native’ residents, while the natives themselves try to balance the beam between shunning the college kids and courting their business into locally-owned stores; and the median income is just enough to have one new car sitting in the driveway, or two used ones. But in many ways ours is a unique city: we’re at a geographic midpoint between two of the largest illegal drug distribution centers in America; and a democratic electorate, fed up at a staggering rise in crime because of this fact, recently elected its first republican mayor in many, many years. Seeking the Crown

Hole in Hollywood

It’s official. Cornhole has slowly migrated to the west coast. And each year, new folks are falling in love with the sport. In the seven and a half years I’ve lived in Los Angeles, I have seen it go from strange looks as I played Cornhole with my friends in my front yard, to seeing it being played on Venice Beach with a crowd of onlookers. A tiny part of me likes to think I was responsible for this…but then I remember that I’m not the only one who infected the nation with the popular sport. It took a great many of us. Read More

Cornhole Champion Theo Baca Chats About Charity, Consistency

(As featured in the print edition of Hole Magazine!)

“Cornhole is a great fundraiser,” Baca, 31, of the Cincinnati, Ohio, area, says.

For example, over the past few years he’s run cornhole competitions to help out the softball team of his daughter, Maci, who’s almost nine. This year’s tournaent will have an open division for pro and semi-pro players, and a “couch potato” division for, well, everybody else. Cornhole is an equal-opportunity activity. “Anybody can do it, no matter what age, if you’re big or small, man or woman, old or young. There’s no physical contact, just two people playing against each other and having good fun.”

“And,” he adds with a laugh, “You can drink beer while doing it.” Read More
