Sports & Saloons: A Win-Win for Everyone
Playing cornhole in the backyard with friends and family is fun, but many people in the greater Cincinnati area have found that playing cornhole at one of their favorite taverns is even better. Read More
Five Tricks to Outwit the Opposite Sex
Whenever I get together with friends to play cornhole we split into guys vs. girls. The inherent competition and the associated prowess for the gender that wins are obvious, but the subtle manipulations that take place between the sexes are less so. In a game such as cornhole, where sheer brute force does not equal superiority, these under-the-radar machinations become the deciding factor. Therefore, it is in each gender's best interest to examine the devices of the other. Here is a glimpse. Read More
The King of Cornhole is a Real Underhanded Guy
Having earned the crown three times already, Matt Guy is indisputably the King of Cornhole.
But that’s almost an understatement. Read More
A Campus Culture
Everyone has that friend: the eternally adaptable figure that can adjust to fit seamlessly into any atmosphere imaginable. You know, that person that can float effortlessly from an impromptu run-in with distinguished university alumni to a high-energy game against the school’s biggest rival to giving a speech at a local charity event without appearing the least bit fazed. She's the person that everybody loves because he or she is so completely a part of every situation. Read More
Variations on Stance and Pitch
The positioning of the feet is paramount in athletic endeavors. Think of baseball, boxing or power lifting. The same applies to cornhole. While hitting a fastball or knocking someone out may not be your goal, getting that bag to stay on the board certainly is. Success starts at the feet and continues with the pitch. Read More

Dangers in the Field
Lawn games are meant for large groups of family and friends, and of the options: bocce, horseshoes or lawn darts, cornhole is by far the safest. Players don't wield two pound, hard resin balls, or throw metal objects at five to 10 miles per hour, or fling twelve-inch long needles into the air. Instead, a one-pound bag of corn is tossed onto an inclined board. However, in spite of the seemingly harmless nature of the game, certain dangers do lurk in the field. Read More
On Alcohol and Performance
“Alcohol is the anesthesia by which we endure the operation of life.” I like to think that Shaw would have been a cornhole player. He certainly had the right idea about alcohol, and I believe, would have found a beautiful pairing of it with our lawn game. Cornhole offers the rare opportunity to imbibe while playing a sport. Of course such can be done while bowling or shooting darts, but cornhole presents a unique characteristic the others do not--relaxation. Read More
The Three Phases of Cornhole
“Potential means you haven’t done anything yet.”
Strong words from NFL hall of fame coach Bill Parcells. It applied to his football players. I believe the words can be applied to today’s cornhole players. The ones who want to reach beyond their potential are the ones who choose to compete against pro level players in the ultimate cornhole competition, a year long quest for the crown called the King of Cornhole.
Then you have Gary. Read More
The Greatest State!
Like any sport, it can’t really be considered great until you’ve been able to sit around with some buddies and get into a healthy sports argument. From “the greatest homerun hitter of all-time” to “in their primes could Tyson knock out Ali” the essence of sports can be felt (and heard) on the barstools of your favorite local pub. Today, I want to introduce the first of what I expect to be many cornhole debates. Which state can claim to be cornhole’s greatest? Read More
Digital Get Down
Yes, that is the title of an NSYNC song. Yes, it relates to Cornhole. Your favorite backyard game has now gone digital. In today’s age – an “instant access” world where we are used to having the highest forms of technology at our fingertips and a library’s volume of information readily-available – we almost expect that we should be entertained at all times. From movies, to music, to video games, we are so used to being occupied twenty-four hours a day that when we don’t have something to do, the jitters start to set in. Read More
Cornhole's Roots
The game of Horseshoes can trace its origins back to ancient civilization. Roman soldiers and peasants each played a variation of tossing metal objects around stakes pounded into the ground. The game was played widely throughout Europe and morphed into its current state. It then spread throughout America via early English settlers. Cornhole cannot trace its roots back to the Romans. Cornhole cannot definitively be traced to settlers. The only absolutes about our lawn game is that the first documented emergence occurred in Cincinnati and that the name is derived from the bags. Navy Destroyer Creates Cornhole Camraderie
Aboard the USS Chafee, some of the officers and crew are quietly alert -- working, watching.
The Chafee is 9,217 tons of American strength capable of carrying out air, undersea, surface, strike, and air control warfare operations in extreme, multi-threat environments. It can do everything from detecting, tracking and destroying aircraft to collecting hydrographic and oceanographic data. Read More
The Power of Cornhole
Six years ago, no one at Easter Seals Work Resource Center could foresee that 20 sheets of donated plywood would launch a new job training program for people with disabilities, a major fundraiser for the agency, and the Monster Energy World Cornhole Championship. Read More
Jack Stagge Makes Cornhole History
It was a beautiful day in downtown Cincinnati – perfect weather for the ACO Monster World Cornhole Championship. And it was a massive competition for the crown, spearheaded by the American Cornhole Organization. It was also a beautiful day for cornhole history to be made: Jack Stagge, a southpaw from Lynchburg, Ohio, took home the gold to win it all. Not only did he win, he made history by taking down three-year cornhole champion, Matt Guy, in the semi-finals and then Steve Vanderver, ranked No. 2, in the final bout. Read More
Stagge Stuns Cornhole World
Hands Matt Guy first loss in three years
Jack Stagge knew he would have to take down Matt Guy. Every player expects Matt Guy in the final match. But defeat Guy and Steve Vanderver, ranked #1 and #2 respectively in the CornyForty? Not gonna happen on a normal day. But this wasn't your normal day. Read More
One Game at a Time
Author’s Note: Names and specific identifying details have been changed to protect the privacy of those concerned.
I work for a homeless outreach coalition, in the same Appalachian town I’ve spent most of my life. In many ways it’s an unremarkable place—the college kids annoy the ‘native’ residents, while the natives themselves try to balance the beam between shunning the college kids and courting their business into locally-owned stores; and the median income is just enough to have one new car sitting in the driveway, or two used ones. But in many ways ours is a unique city: we’re at a geographic midpoint between two of the largest illegal drug distribution centers in America; and a democratic electorate, fed up at a staggering rise in crime because of this fact, recently elected its first republican mayor in many, many years. Cornhole 4 Cancer
Diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer shortly after finding out his wife was expecting their first child, Jeff Wokoun had every reason to be bitter. But Wokoun, today the proud father of a 15-month-old son, decided instead to do what he could to draw something good from his situation. Read More
Say Cornhole!
We'll say it all day long: "CORNHOLE!" That's because cornhole isn't a dirty word among those who love and appreciate the sport. However, the word "cornhole" offended somebody in charge of Apple's iPhone game applications in Canada. Recently, the iPhone game "Cornhole All-Stars" - developed by JUFTi in Columbus, Ohio - was the target of somebody's unease with cornhole. The game is now listed on Apple's Canadian App Store as "C******e All-Stars." Censorship sucks! Read More
Cornhole All-Stars Unchained in Canadian App Store
American company JUFTi Games today emerged victorious in its battle to lift an unfair ban on the word cornhole – central to the title of its popular iPhone game - in Canada after taking protest to the streets of Toronto. (From a press release via JUFTi.com.) Read More

Behind the Boards: Breaking Boundaries
Oftentimes, significance is gained from sport only after looking back at all the time you poured into it. When an athlete is in the daily grind, running from practices to competitions to who knows what else, the little things seem to stick out while the larger, more important or encompassing lessons tend to go unnoticed. But by taking a step back and consciously looking over past occurrences, influential experiences have a way of bringing themselves to light – even if they didn’t necessarily evoke emotion or importance at the time they took place. Hole in Hollywood
It’s official. Cornhole has slowly migrated to the west coast. And each year, new folks are falling in love with the sport. In the seven and a half years I’ve lived in Los Angeles, I have seen it go from strange looks as I played Cornhole with my friends in my front yard, to seeing it being played on Venice Beach with a crowd of onlookers. A tiny part of me likes to think I was responsible for this…but then I remember that I’m not the only one who infected the nation with the popular sport. It took a great many of us. Read More

Cornhole Tournament to benefit The St. John’s Home for Children
(As featured in the print edition of Hole Magazine!)
Though Dale Smith and Larry Wise of Kentucky walked away from St. John’s Home for Children’s cornhole tournament on Aug. 16, the boys at St. John’s were the real winners. Twenty teams participated in their second annual “Pitching for Kids” cornhole tournament fundraiser. Read More
The Cornhole Difference
In Canada, mentioning cornhole in a crowded room generally results in a slew of blank stares being tossed my way followed by dead silence. This is short-lived, of course, because the predictable chorus of laughter always ensues. The challenging part is convincing family and friends that it isn’t some kind of farmer’s joke, but a legitimate and entertaining game that trumps others of its class. Read More
Cornhole Champion Theo Baca Chats About Charity, Consistency
(As featured in the print edition of Hole Magazine!)
“Cornhole is a great fundraiser,” Baca, 31, of the Cincinnati, Ohio, area, says.
For example, over the past few years he’s run cornhole competitions to help out the softball team of his daughter, Maci, who’s almost nine. This year’s tournaent will have an open division for pro and semi-pro players, and a “couch potato” division for, well, everybody else. Cornhole is an equal-opportunity activity. “Anybody can do it, no matter what age, if you’re big or small, man or woman, old or young. There’s no physical contact, just two people playing against each other and having good fun.”
“And,” he adds with a laugh, “You can drink beer while doing it.” Read More

Athens County Fair
So your setting at the Athens County fair, waiting on the dudes who are suppose to be running the tourney to show up. It’s posted that it starts at 7pm. Check your watch it’s 7:05. No Boards, no bags, no dudes still. Three or four teams have already walked off grumbling and talking to themselves, and there’s 11 or 12 more standing there looking about as confused as you are on what’s going on exactly. The director agrees to try the dudes again one last time from his cell. No answer. And he doesn’t look too concerned himself. Read More

New Boards and Bags, Good Times
I recently got some Tournament Series cornhole boards and bags from the American Cornhole Organization. Yes, I have some connections. And lately, cornhole has been very popular in the streets of the Hurst/Euless/Bedford area in Texas. So far, mind you, it's just been my father-in-law and I playing, but that's not the point (and I did exaggerate a bit). What's been appealing is the camaraderie, the appeal of the shiny new boards, and knowing that life isn't all the bad when playing cornhole. Read More
"B"lind Draw "A"ttendan"C"e
The A B C 's of Corn Hole
When I first began throwing every Thursday at Buns, like most any weekly gathering of holers, we always had a great time and usually played a blind draw to keep things fair. Attendance never seemed to grow much, little spikes here and there, but it was great to see our friends and catch up on what happened that week and throw some bags. Sometimes the topic would land on why we didn’t have more people showing up since we played at a local restaurant-carry out and anyone was welcome, and we would all like to see a bigger figure in the money pot, as well as get more folks to come out to help the owner since he let us gather at his place each week...
